What is communion and why do we do it?

Matthew 26:17-30 says " While they were eating, Jesus took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take and eat; this is my body.” Then he took a cup, and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, saying, “Drink from it, all of you. This is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins."

The fasinating thing about this to me is that while Jesus was giving this analogy of the bread being His body and the wine being His blood, I wonder if His disciples knew exactly what He was talking about. Jesus knew that His blood would be shed for them, His body beaten and bruised and He STILL chose to take our place. There is no greater love than the cross, Thank you Jesus!

Communion reminds us of the cross. The act that Jesus took in our behalf. He took our sin and shame and bore it on the cross, paid a debt that was not His, but He paid it anyway. Why? Because HE LOVES US! When sin entered the world, there was a barrier between us and God, but thank you Jesus for the cross. That cross tore the veil so that we may have access to the Father like He intended it. So why do we take communion? To remind us that we should have been on that cross. To repent of our sinful ways and live a life full of Christ. To say "thank you Jesus."

This is my body. This is my blood. Do this in rememberance of me.
